💭 Chiles en Nogada season is here in Mexico City, and I'm genuinely excited. Walking past restaurants this week, I keep seeing the menus change over — that walnut sauce, the pomegranate seeds on top, the whole green-white-red thing staring back at me. I've had a few versions before but never really gone deep. This year I'm making it a mission to try as many as I can find, different neighborhoods, different kitchens, see who does it best. As of August 3, 2026, Mexico now requires a New World Screwworm inspection document for pet dogs and pet birds entering from the US. This affects anyone flying or driving into Mexico with a dog or bird, timed to the ongoing screwworm outbreak in US livestock and pets. Get your pet examined by a USDA-accredited vet no more than 5 days before travel, and bring the signed certificate with you. Cats are unaffected, no paperwork needed for them. This rule is already in effect, so if you have a trip booked, check now rather than at the airport.

One of Mexico's most beloved agua fresca flavors, made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers in water and sweetening to taste. The result is a deep ruby-red drink that is tart, floral, slightly tannic, and deeply refreshing in the heat. Found everywhere from street carts to sit-down restaurants. Also drunk warm as a tea.

What's in it: Dried hibiscus flowers (flor de jamaica), water, sugar, lime juice. Sometimes a pinch of cinnamon or ginger is added.

Apartment photos in Mexico are aspirational documents. They show the living room in the best possible light, taken at the one angle that hides the water stain, on the one afternoon when the light comes through the window just right. What they do not show is the dog that barks from 11pm to 2am, or the bus route that runs directly below the bedroom window, or the fact that the nearest grocery store is a forty-minute walk and there is no Uber in this part of town.

This is not dishonesty on the landlord’s part. It is just the nature of apartment hunting anywhere. The difference in Mexico is that many expats are signing leases from abroad, based entirely on photos and a video call, moving into places they have never physically visited.

Before you commit to anything, visit. Not just the apartment — the neighborhood. Walk it at different times of day. Walk it at night. Sit at a cafe for an hour and pay attention to the noise level, the foot traffic, the energy. Check how far the nearest market is. Ask the person at the front desk of your Airbnb what they think of the area.

Run Google Street View on the street the apartment is on. Street View is not perfect, but it will tell you whether the street is commercial or residential, paved or unpaved, and whether there are businesses directly below the windows.

The lease is easy to sign. The neighborhood is what you actually live in.

Farmacias Similares runs walk-in doctor's offices attached to thousands of pharmacy locations nationwide. That $70 peso visit is real, licensed care for basic stuff like a cold or a prescription refill. Step up to an actual private clinic and you still pay a fraction of US urgent care. CDMX, Monterrey, and Cancún run 15 to 20 percent above the national average due to rent and demand. Budget $4 to $84 USD per visit depending on where you land and who you see. Compare that to $150+ USD for a basic US urgent care visit with no insurance.

Your US or Canadian health insurance almost certainly does not cover you in Mexico for more than emergency care, and many plans stop covering you entirely after 6 months abroad. Getting health coverage sorted before you move — not after — is critical. The good news: healthcare in Mexico is far cheaper than the US, and good private coverage is affordable.

Mexico's second-largest city and its tech hub, with a large and growing expat community especially in the Chapultepec and Providencia neighborhoods. More Mexican in character than CDMX's expat neighborhoods, with a strong local culture, excellent food, and a cooler climate than most large Mexican cities. Good healthcare, strong infrastructure, and generally safe in expat areas.
